How to makeup like Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish may be only 17 years old, but she already has an impressive fashion sense and beauty routine.

The singer/songwriter’s aesthetic could best be described as “unapologetically stylish” — there are few trends here, and even fewer costume changes. She does wear lots of black and white, though, which is great if you happen to have a wardrobe filled with those colors. If not, we’ve got you covered. We’ll show you exactly what to wear from head-to-toe next time you walk down the street.

Here are nine tips for looking like Billie Eilish.

1. Get your outfit right

Eilish wears mostly classic outfits throughout her videos, including skinny jeans, leggings, T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, button up shirts, dresses, skirts, and more. The outfit of choice? A dark wash denim jacket, paired with high waisted pants, ballet flats, or boot cut jeans.

If you don’t want to spend too much money on new clothes, try shopping at thrift stores. They usually carry all kinds of cute clothing options that will also work well with any neutral tones you own. And they won’t make you feel bad about yourself.

2. Start with a good base and primer

First things first…a flawless foundation and primer really do matter when attempting to recreate someone else’s look. This includes Eilish’s perfectly contoured brow, skin tone, and overall complexion. It’s important to use a water-based moisturizer before applying anything to avoid clogged pores.

For our guide, we used NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil because it gives us a slightly smudgy effect without being overwhelming. Our favorite part was probably using the pencil directly onto the lips instead of blending. This gave it a real matte finish rather than one created by layering two different shades together.

We applied it with clean fingers and went back in once the color had set a little bit. Then we blended a second layer on top of our lip line to create depth. Afterward, we put Vaseline on top of everything to lock them in place and keep the coloring consistent.

Next comes primers. We reached for Benefit Porefection Primer Face SPF 30 ($28) because it blends nicely under a lot of foundations and provides light coverage. Just take small amounts on fingertips and apply to your forehead, nose, cheeks, chin, and jawline. For extra texture, add a tiny amount of liquid or loose finishing powder on top. You should now have a smooth canvas ready to paint your masterpiece upon.

3. Use cream eyeshadow, not powder.

Another key factor here is choosing the correct eye shadow shade. When selecting yours, try to find a match that closely resembles Eilish’s signature brown eyes. To help narrow down your choices, check out these helpful apps.

To start, we chose MAC’s Cream Eyeshadow Quad in the color called “Dark Matter.” You can buy it online for $14.50 or pick it up at Sephora for around $17.00.

You’ll need three thin brushes to apply this product. First, sweep the brush along your upper lash line. Next, dip the tip into the formula and lightly tap the bristles against your lower lashes. Finally, repeat the process above until you reach the outer corners of your eyes. This applies the pigment evenly across your lids. Repeat with a third brush for the other side.

Once finished, use a fluffy brush to gently pat the rest of the powder away from your lid lines. Now, let your eyes settle for 10 minutes while you prep your eyebrows. Using an angled eyebrow brush, shape and fill in your eyebrows. Be sure to follow the natural arch of your brows. Don’t forget to draw on your crease since this helps define your unique features. Once complete, dust your freshly shaped eyebrows with translucent setting powder to ensure longevity.

Finally, swipe your entire eyelid with your chosen liner. Try lining the inside corner of each eye, connecting the inner edge of the liner to the pupil. Do this from the outside corner inward towards the center of the iris. Fill in underneath the brow bone with darker liner, again following the natural slope of your brows. Blend your liners together where necessary. Lastly, extend your liner past your lashes to meet the crease—this creates definition between your bottom eyelash and your upper eyelashes.

Now, it’s time to highlight. We recommend going with several layers of gold-toned shadows to achieve a sun kissed shimmery glow. Here, we tried Urban Decay 24 Hour Gold Glitter Eye Shadow Trio ($19), available at Ulta. There are many affordable alternatives, however.

Start by sweeping a large dab of glittery gray-gold across your eyelid. Then, slowly drag upwards diagonally from corner to corner using short strokes. Go lighter on the edges and build up brightness near the middle. Once you’ve completed your diagonal line, turn upward to connect the ends of the line at the crease level. Continue building up color intensity on the eyelid leading up to the crease. Finally, use a damp sponge to blend everything together.

It’s very easy to mess up your eyeshadow application here. So pay attention during the tutorial above to ensure you stay within its guidelines. Your goal is to enhance your natural features and play up your best assets, not completely cover something up.

4. Line your lips in some way that looks natural on you.

Lip liner is always a popular option for anyone trying to replicate another person’s style. But sometimes it doesn’t quite fit who you are. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to customize your pout without resorting to a sharp object. Instead, opt for a creamy concealer that matches your skin tone. This allows you to seamlessly blend it in with the rest of your face.

Our preferred brand is Smashbox Photo Finish Liquid Liner in “Pink Pucker,” which costs $18. It feels super soft and silky on your lips. Take a toothpick and carefully apply it along your desired lip outline. Hold the applicator vertically, moving it horizontally to form a straight line. You can switch directions halfway through if needed. Smoothly wipe excess product aside. Lightly blot your lips afterwards with tissue paper.

5. Apply blush over your cheek bones, then blend it out toward the sides of your face.

Adding blush to complement your natural coloring is a simple trick that never goes out of style. Blush adds warmth and life to your skin, making you appear healthier and happier. While most blushes come in warm hues, the ones designed specifically for fair complexions tend to lean cooler. These typically feature brighter reds and oranges.

As far as brands go, we love NYX Professional Soft Cheek Color Blusher Duo Stick in “Rose Glow,” which retails for $12.99. Simply apply the stick to your cheeks, working outward to mimic the gradient appearance of your natural coloring. This makes for a subtle yet noticeable change. If you prefer to have a stronger impact, try mixing equal parts rose oil and mineral spirits to rub directly onto your cheeks. Rub the mixture in thoroughly, wait five seconds, and rinse with cool water. Pat dry and admire your handiwork.

6. You can’t go wrong with eyeliner!

While Eilish rarely uses eyeliner, we think it’s absolutely worth adding for a truly striking result. We found that waterproof eyeliners like Too Faced Shadow Lock Waterproof Gel Eyeliner provide long-lasting effects without tugging or pulling. Plus, you can easily adjust their thickness according to your preference.

This particular eyeliner isn’t cheap, retailing for $30. However, we were able to snag a sample size at Michael’s for less than half price. All you have left to do after swiping the gel across your upper lid is give it a gentle fold at the end. That’s it! With practice, you’ll be able to master the art of creating the perfect wing every single time.

7. Finish off your look with lipstick or gloss (or both).

In addition to eyeliner, lipstick is often overlooked when recreating others’ styles. Yet, it plays such a crucial role in defining your personal identity. No wonder women are drawn to lipsticks yearning for iconic names like Chanel Red Satin, Revlon Super Lustrous Milk Gloss, Wet & Wild Mega Shock Lipstick, and more.
